Installing apps
n8n, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent: the one you pick at checkout installs by itself, free. One app per server, and what a switch deletes.
On this page
Three apps install free: n8n, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent. Checkout asks What do you want to run?: pick one of them and it installs by itself as soon as your new server is ready, or pick Just a server. Every choice is the same price. Full root means you can also install anything else by hand.
Under Advanced: system image, checkout also lets you choose what is on the disk at first boot: Ubuntu 24.04 (the default), the AI agent box image (Claude Code, Docker, Playwright and a browser terminal, ready to use) or the n8n image. The image does not change the price, and the apps do not need the AI agent box.
How the apps work
- The app you pick at checkout installs once, when the new server is first ready; reinstalling the server later does not install it again. Your server's Overview then leads with the app and a Get started list of next steps.
- To add an app later, press Install (free) on its card at the top of your server's Overview. If you picked Just a server, the page does not ask: press Want an app? Install one free first. The server must be running.
- One app runs on a server at a time. Switch app replaces it: the old app and all its data are deleted from the server after you type its name to confirm, then the new app installs. Each app's guide says what that deletes. On an older server that already has several apps installed, switching to one of them deletes nothing: the other is paused with its data kept.
- The running app opens inside the dashboard, or in its own tab at https://vmN-app.box.scalemaxcloud.com, behind your ScaleMax Cloud login.
- OpenClaw and Hermes Agent need an AI model: press Connect AI in the Get started list, then paste your ScaleMax key or use another AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter or a custom address).
- An app's AI model, Chat apps and Settings screens each end with a Common problems list for when something does not work.
Which plan
KVM 1 (1 vCPU / 4 GB) is for light, API-only agent use; Hermes idles around 239 MB. KVM 2 (2 vCPU / 8 GB) is the recommended size for daily agent work, with room for a browser-based tool that spikes. OpenClaw needs at least 2 GB of RAM, which every listed plan has; for a custom size with less, checkout does not offer it.
