Frequently asked questions
Short answers on servers, operations and money. The legal pages hold the full policies.
The guest
What does “shared IPv4 + 20 ports” mean?
KVM 1, KVM 2 and custom sizes sit on a private address behind a shared public IPv4. We forward a contiguous block of twenty ports on that public address to your guest. SSH uses the first port of the block; the other nineteen are inbound mappings for whatever you bind on the VM. You do not get every public port unless you add Dedicated IPv4. KVM 4 and KVM 8 include one. It is set up automatically when the server is ready; if no address is free at that moment, it is set up within 24 hours, by hand.
How do I connect over SSH?
Use the public hostname and the SSH port on the server page, not the private 10.10.10.x address. On a shared IPv4, SSH is the first port of your 20-port block, so the port is not 22.
ssh -p <ssh-port> root@vmN.box.scalemaxcloud.com
Do I get root?
Yes. Every server is full root on a KVM guest, whichever image you pick at checkout: Ubuntu 24.04, the AI agent box or n8n. You install, patch, and secure the machine, unless you add Managed Support, which covers OS updates and security patches.
Can I run Docker?
Yes. Full root on KVM means you can install Docker. The AI agent box image ships with Docker installed. Hermes Agent's one-click path uses Docker Compose; n8n's install does too.
Is there IPv6?
No. Servers are IPv4 only. For a full public address of your own, add Dedicated IPv4 (included on KVM 4 and KVM 8).
How fast is provisioning?
Automatic, and typically under three minutes. The dashboard flips to running when the guest is up; the SSH details and the browser console are on that server page.
Which tier for Hermes or OpenClaw?
KVM 1 (1 vCPU / 4 GB) suits light, API-only agent use; Hermes idles around 239 MB. KVM 2 (2 vCPU / 8 GB) is the recommended size for daily agent work, with room for a browser tool that spikes. Pick the AI agent box image at checkout if you want Claude Code and Docker ready on first boot. OpenClaw installs in about 57 seconds when we measured it. You supply your own LLM API key for both Hermes and OpenClaw.
Can I send mail? Port 25 is closed.
Outbound SMTP (TCP port 25) is blocked by default — an anti-spam measure — and opened on request. Ask in a ticket with a lawful use (transactional mail for an app you operate). We can close it again if it is misused. See the Acceptable Use Policy.
Operations
What happens if I don’t renew?
Monthly service is prepaid. When a renewal is due, wallet credit is applied first. If that covers the amount, the server renews. Automatic charging of a saved card is currently switched off until it is verified; if the wallet does not cover the renewal, you pay from billing. After an unpaid renewal there is a three-day grace period; then the instance may be stopped and network access removed. When you cancel, or when we terminate, disk data is kept for seven days and then deleted. Export first. The Terms of Service are the contract language.
How do backups work, and are restores tested?
Every server includes scheduled full-disk backups: daily or weekly, kept 1 to 7 days. Priority Backups unlocks hourly (kept up to 2 days), every 6 hours (up to 7), and daily or weekly (up to 30 days). Settings outside the tier are rejected. Copies sync hourly to offsite storage in Finland (EU), a different country from the servers in Gravelines, France. We have run a full restore drill from them. Restore overwrites the live disk: the server is stopped first, then started again if it was running. Guide.
Is my data encrypted in transit to backups?
Yes. Copies travel from Gravelines, France to Finland over SFTP, with SSH key authentication and pinned host keys. The browser console, and the browser terminal on the AI agent box image, run over HTTPS.
Can I upgrade RAM or CPU later?
Yes. Add-ons include +2 vCPU and +4 GB RAM, plus disk, Dedicated IPv4, backups, snapshots, and Managed Support. Buy them at checkout or later from dashboard add-ons. Upgrading guide.
Do CPU, RAM, or disk changes need a reboot?
Yes. Extra CPU, RAM, or disk is applied on the hypervisor; the guest does not see it until you reboot. If you buy those add-ons at the original checkout, they are folded into the guest so it is born at the right size and you skip that reboot.
Money and policy
How do I top up the wallet?
From Wallet, through Cashfree (UPI, cards, net banking, wallets), from ₹100 to ₹50,000 in whole rupees. A top-up cannot be paid for with credit. Billing and wallet.
What is the 25% referral credit rule?
Referral credit pays at most 25% of an order, in whole rupees. Top-up credit can pay the rest. Referral credit is used first. On an ₹899 order with ₹500 of referral credit, ₹224 is used and ₹675 is due. Add ₹1,000 of top-up credit and ₹0 is due.
What is prohibited?
Unsolicited bulk mail; DDoS, scanning, and stresser services; proof-of-work mining; illegal content under Indian law; CSAM; malware, ransomware C2, and phishing; reselling the guest as hosting without written consent. The full list is the Acceptable Use Policy. AUP terminations are not refunded.
What is the refund policy?
New customers get a seven-day money-back window on the first paid order. Cancel in the dashboard or write to support within those seven days. Ongoing months are prepaid: cancelling stops the next charge, unused days are not refunded. The Refund & Cancellation Policy covers how each payment method is refunded.
How can I pay?
Checkout takes UPI, cards, net banking and wallets through Cashfree. Pick the one you like on Cashfree's secure payment page.
How do I get help?
Support is open 9am–11pm IST, every day, and the first reply comes within 2 hours in support hours. Message us on WhatsApp, call, email support@scalemaxcloud.com, or open a ticket from your dashboard. Every channel is on the contact page.
What does Managed Support add?
We manage your server: OS updates, security patches and hands-on fixes inside your server, with priority replies. It is a monthly add-on, from checkout or dashboard add-ons.
