Backups and snapshots

Backup tiers, offsite copies in Finland, restore behaviour, and the snapshot cap.

On this page

Two different primitives. A backup is a full copy of the disk that you can restore later. Snapshots are near-instant restore points on the live disk, capped.

Tiers

Every server includes scheduled backups. Standard allows daily or weekly, kept 1 to 7 days. Priority Backups unlocks hourly (kept up to 2 days), every 6 hours (up to 7), and daily or weekly (up to 30 days). The save API rejects a frequency or retention outside the current tier.

Scheduled backups

Open the server and choose Backups & snapshots in the server menu (every server's backups are also under Servers → Backups). Turn the schedule on, pick a frequency the tier allows and how long to keep copies; changes save themselves. “Back up now” runs one immediately. Copies sync hourly to offsite storage in Finland (EU), a different country from the servers in Gravelines, France (EU).

Restore

Restoring overwrites the running disk. The server is stopped first. If it was running, it is started again after the restore. Progress is shown on Backups & snapshots while it runs. The dashboard asks you to type RESTORE before it proceeds. A restore has been tested successfully.

Snapshots and the cap

One snapshot slot is included. Snapshot Pack raises the cap to five named restore points you can roll back to from the same Backups & snapshots tab. Rolling back replaces current disk state. Delete old snapshots if you are at the cap; the create button refuses when the slot count is full.

Snapshots are not a substitute for the offsite copy in Finland. They live on our platform. Use a backup when you need the offsite copy.
