Run Claude Code 24/7

Claude Code on your laptop stops when the lid closes. On an always-on server it keeps working. Here is how to set that up on a ScaleMax Cloud KVM VPS.

On this page

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal. On your laptop it stops when the lid closes; on a server it keeps working. The AI agent box image ships with Claude Code, Docker, Playwright and a browser terminal, ready to use.

Pick the AI agent box image

At checkout, open Advanced: system image and choose AI agent box, or choose it on the configure page for a custom size. Claude Code is not one of the apps under What do you want to run?, so Just a server is enough there. A server built from the plain Ubuntu 24.04 image does not include Claude Code. Any plan works. A browser tool such as Playwright can spike memory, so KVM 2 (2 vCPU / 8 GB) leaves more room than KVM 1 for daily work.

Open a terminal

Use SSH from your computer, or Open terminal at the top of the server page (the AI agent box's web terminal) to work from any browser, a phone included. See Web terminal.

ssh -p <ssh-port> root@vmN.box.scalemaxcloud.com
claude --version

claude --version prints the installed version, which confirms Claude Code is there.

Run claude and follow the sign-in prompt. The server plan pays for the machine; the AI model is separate. Sign in with your own Anthropic account, or use an API key, and usage is billed by that provider. If the server has no browser, Claude Code shows a link: open it on your own computer and paste the code it gives you back into the terminal.

export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=<your-key>
claude

The export applies to the current shell only. Keep keys out of shared files and repositories.

Keep it running after you disconnect

Start Claude Code inside tmux, a terminal session that lives on the server. Close the SSH window or the browser tab and the session keeps going.

tmux new -s claude
claude

Detach with Ctrl-b, then d. Come back from any terminal with tmux attach -t claude. If tmux is not found, apt install tmux adds it. A tmux session survives a lost connection but not a reboot of the server, so restart Claude Code after one.

What lives where

Your code and Claude Code's settings sit on the server's disk. Scheduled backups copy that disk offsite to Finland (EU); see Backups and snapshots. You manage the server as root, unless you add Managed Support.

Limits

  • Servers are in Gravelines, France (EU); there is no India region. Keystrokes travel to France and back, so the terminal has a small delay. The agent does not mind: it keeps working on the server.
  • Outbound mail on port 25 is closed by default, and KVM 1 and KVM 2 share an IPv4 address with 20 forwarded ports; see Ports and networking.
  • Claude Code needs its own Anthropic account or API key; a server plan does not include model usage.
